Google announced on Monday that it is was re-branding. Through its official blog, Google’s co-founder Larry Page said it was creating a company called Alphabet.
This move is aimed at (among other things) creating “cleanliness”
“
Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable.”
“This new structure will allow us to keep tremendous focus on the extraordinary opportunities we have inside of Google”
Under the new structure Page will be Alphabet’s CEO with Google’s co-founder Sergey Brin as the President. This will also see Google (represented by letter G) run under Alphabet as one of the many group of companies.
“This newer Google is a bit slimmed down, with the companies that are pretty far afield of our main Internet products contained in Alphabet instead.”
According to the blog post, Alphabet Inc. will replace Google Inc. and all shares under Google Inc will automatically be under Alphabet Inc.
However, on why they settled on Alphabet, Page had this to say;
“We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity’s most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search.”
