MURANG’A – The coronation of National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi as Mount Kenya spokesperson took place Saturday May 22 amid heavy police presence at Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine in Murang’a County.
Area governor Mwangi wa Iria had vowed not to allow the ceremony to take place at the shrine.
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui were also against the ceremony with Waiguru urging Muturi to look for votes instead.
This is even as Governors, Muthomi Njuki (Tharaka Nithi), Martin Wambora (Embu) and Kiraitu Murungi (Meru) endorsed the move.
Hundreds of elders gathered at the shrine in the ceremony that will see speaker Muturi take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta as the region’s spokes person.

Speaker Muturi went into seclusion ahead of the ritual where he was barred from leaving his residence, eating certain types of foods, entertaining guests, and seeing women.
He is reported to have used the time to meditate by a river near his residence in Muthaiga, Nairobi.
At least 1,000 elders from across the Mt Kenya region were expected to attend the event Saturday.
