VIHIGA – Residents of Vihiga were left in shock after a family blocked the busy Vihiga-Kisumu highway with the body of their dead relative.
This is after the failed to get admission at the Vihiga County Referral hospital morgue for the patient who died at the hospital.
The relatives were reportedly turned away by mortuary attendants who refused to preserve the remains because they were on Madaraka Day holiday.
They then left with the body and placed it by the roadside as they as they deliberated on their next move.
When all seemed not to be working, they decided to take a hospital stretcher and wheeled the body of their kin to the busy highway in protest, blocking a huge traffic snarl-up.
The bizarre incident drew a large crowd, with police officers alerted to the situation resorting to dispersing the crowd with teargas.
A relative who spoke to the media said they brought their mother to the hospital where she passed on the following day, but the hospital had refused to admit the body at the morgue.
The relative said the hospital closed its gates on them when they saw them.
An inside source however said the stand-off was as a result of a misunderstanding between members of staff and the administration.
