Three Suspects behind Nairobi Southern By-pass robberies arrested

NAIROBI – Suspects linked to a spate of robberies on the Southern by-pass in Nairobi were yesterday nabbed after an operation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)

The DCI said three suspects were arrested in Kibra after several reports of motorists who had been robbed in the recent past.

In a statement on it online handles, the DCI said the arrest followed detailed analysis and investigations of the robberies, with detectives employing cyber & forensic analysis techniques, to identify the beneficiaries of the crimes.

Following this, suspects Boniface Winjira Unganyi, the proprietor of Basement Crew mobile shop within Lindi in Kibra, was arrested as the key suspect.

Detectives established that mobile phones robbed from victims along the busy highway, found their way to the suspect’s shop, where they were being sold cheaply to locals.

Sleuths recovered 102 phones suspected to have been stolen from Uganyi’s shop, in the raid that was conducted by officers from Langata Police Station.

Also arrested during the raid were 35-year-old Alex Mboya, who was found in possession of a victim’s phone, and a 16-year-old minor studying at a secondary school in Langata.

The DCI said over five suspects had been arraigned in court in the recent weeks in connection with the violent robberies along the highway.

This was made possible through the collaboration of detectives based at Lang’ata, supported by Crime Research & Intelligence crime busters.
