Kwazulu-Natal – Former South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma handed himself in to the police Wednesday night to begin serving a jail sentence he was handed for contempt of court.

This is after he was handed a 15-month jail term last week after he failed to attend a corruption inquiry.

His foundation had revealed that Zuma travelled to a prison near to his home in KwaZulu-Natal province late on Wednesday incompliance with the court where he was booked.

“President Zuma has decided to comply with the incarceration order,” his foundation said in a short statement.

His daughter, Dudu Zuma-Sambudla, also wrote on Twitter that her father was “en route [to the jail]” and that “he is still in high spirits”.

The sentencing sparked an unprecedented legal drama in South Africa, with a deadline imposed of midnight on Wednesday for his arrest.

Zuma was handed the sentence on 29 June after he defied an instruction to give evidence at an inquiry into corruption during his nine years in power.
