NIGERIA – A renowned Muslim leader has been abducted by gunmen during a night raid in Nigeria’s north-western state of Kaduna.

Reports indicate that Emir Alhassan Adamu Kajuru was taken along with 12 of his relatives in the raid.

Amongst the relatives who were taken away with him were five women and a baby who is just a few months old.

Police say dozens of gunmen took part in the raid.

This comes even as Nigeria registers a record number of Kidnapping especially in northern Nigeria where more than 1,000 students were abducted from schools and colleges since December.

News reports in the country indicate that a few people were released after paying ransom but nine have been killed and at least 200 are still missing.

Kidnapping for ransom has become a lucrative business and there are growing suspicions that armed gangs might be getting a helping hand from some powerful Nigerians including members of security agencies.
