Former sports CS Hassan Wario found guilty of Corruption during 2016 Rio Olympics

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario and National Olympic Committee Kenya official Stephen Soi have been found guilty of corruption.

The two were found guilty of corruption and abuse of office in the case that was linked to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The court also acquitted four others suspects in the case due to lack of sufficient evidence. 

Four other suspects namely former Sports PS Richard Ekai, Haron Komen, former director of administration at the Ministry of Sports, Francis Kinyili and Patrick Kimathi Nkabu were acquitted for lack of enough evidence.

Magistrate Elizabeth Juma siting in Nairobi said that Wario approved the inclusion of three other persons travel to Rio which amounted to abuse of office.

The three were also awarded allowances as part of team Kenya and according to the judgment, this amounted to wastage of resources.

Wario and Soi were detained at Gigiri Police Station pending their sentencing on Thursday, September 16.
