
Kenyans mark Mashujaa Day by celebrating citizens who have excelled in their respective field. Each year, the president honours different mashujaa (heroes) from across the country for excelling in their fields.
This year, Mashujaa day 2021, is no different as President Uhuru Kenyatta honoured 220 Kenyans, from sportsmen to community leaders.
This is the 57 edition of Mashujaa day, a day that changed from Kenyatta Day under the 2010 constitution.
Ferdinand Omanyala
Omanyala came into the limelight during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where he finished fourth in the 100 meters race.
He again broke barriers and broke the African record in 100 meters with a time of 9.77. The previous record stood at 9.85 by South African Akani Simbine.
Virginia Aoko
This is the 13 year old girl who rowed her pregnant mother to hospital amidst floods in Budalangi earlier this year.
Aoko’s mother woke her up amidst labour pains on the night of May 18. It is then that she took it upon her self to row her mother to a nearby health facility where she delivered successfully.
