Taskforce formed to probe witchcraft in Kisii

A taskforce is in place to investigate the lynching of four elderly persons in Kisii over witchcraft claims.

Governor James Ongwae during the inauguration of the taskforce said it has one month the depth of witchcraft in the county.

Ongwae asked the team to come up with mitigation measures against witchcraft for action within the one month.

The governor said the taskforce will also share its outcome to the national government.

According to the county chief, this would ensure security for all citizens and avoid a repeat of the Marani incident.

He however suggested examination of challenges facing the youth since they were at the forefront in the killings.

But Kisii county assembly majority whip John Ombati wondered why growing old and developing grey hair was associated with witchcraft.

The taskforce comprises of Samuel Bosire (Abagusii cultural and development council secretary), Dennis Ombachi (MCA Marani) and Dr. Richard Onkware (Director, Public Health).

Others are Obino Nyambane (Director, Culture), Director Lands department, Florence Abuya (Maendeleo ya wanawake) and Kevin Mamboleo (youth).

Representatives of the Human rights organizations will be Kerubo Abuya, Catherine Nyamato and advocate Harun Ndubi.
