items not allowed at JKIA airport or plane

If you are travelling for the first time or are planning to in the future, get to know that these are the things not allowed at JKIA, any airport or plane.

As such, nothing would be detrimental to their flight schedule than to have one of their personal items flagged off during security checks.

Aside from the normal items that are considered as security risks and hazards to the safety of other passengers such as weapons and flammable liquids, other items, however, may pose as normal objects but will not be allowed past the security checkpoints at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

According to the official sites of both the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and the country’s flag carrier airline, Kenya Airways, passengers seeking to board a flight, should not pack these things not allowed at either JKIA, any airport or plane for that matter.

Sporting equipment: These include baseball, cricket bats, golf clubs, hockey sticks, billiard cues. These items may pose a danger and may be used as a weapon.

Hand lotions, creams and oils: According to the KAA official site, custom officers only allow these specific items if they are stored in containers up to 100mls and placed in a transparent resealable bag and thereafter screened separately from other items in the hand luggage.

“The capacity of the transparent plastic bag must not be greater than 1 litre,” KAA stated.

Items in this section include lotions, perfumes, sprays, gels, pastes including vaseline and eye shadow, and pressurised containers such as shaving foam and deodorants

Baby toys such as toy guns, gun-shaped items: Custom officers will confiscate items that resemble a weapon even if it is a toy gun as a security measure.

Pocket knives- what might be considered a useful tool that comes in handy in various situations will not be allowed past the security checkpoints.

Further, other items flagged include those deemed as a security hazard by the law.

“Please note that these items will be retrieved at the boarding gate by the local authorities and depending on local conditions, the items may not be returned to you,” from the Kenya Airways site.

Items such as medicine and baby food needed during the flight are allowed inside the hand luggage.

“You may buy any liquids beyond the security checkpoints including the Duty-Free Items or in-flight. Items purchased must be packed in security tamper-evident bags and accompanied by proof of purchase upon presenting them at the security checkpoint,” KAA stated.

For those seeking to access JKIA’s restricted areas, temporary and permanent security passes are issued at the JKIA security passes office and KAA Headquarters respectively.

However, the passengers should provide valid reasons with document support as evidence when applying for the security pass.

“Kenya Airports Authority provides this (access) to the public who may want to access the Airport restricted areas issued at the discretion of the Managing Director, General Manager Security or the Airport Manager.”

Further, before accessing these areas, the passengers have to pass through the X-Ray machine as well as the metal detector as part of the security measures.
