63 Candidates, Supervisor arrested in KCSE 2021 Cheating Saga in Kakuma

63 candidates and a supervisor were arrested on allegations of exam cheating in KCSE 2021 within the Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana.

Turkana county police commander Samwel Ndanyi confirmed the arrest and said it was in connection to exam cheating allegations.

The arrests were made at two separate KCSE 2021 examination centres within Kakuma Refugee Camp on Tuesday.

25 candidates were arrested from Somali Bantu Secondary School while 38 were from Greenlight Secondary School.

The arrested supervisor was identified by name as Mr Edward Ekodor Lochole.

Several phones were confiscated from candidates at Greenlight Secondary School.

“The preferred charges against candidates and the supervisor were examination malpractices and an additional charge of negligence of duty for the supervisor,” the county police boss told Nation.

He said the candidates were released on a free bond to sit for the Wednesday morning paper.

The supervisor was released on cash bail.

The incident happened on the third day of KCSE exams that kicked off across the county on Monday.

Since the exams began, pockets of malpractices have been reported in some parts of the country.

In Busia,  on Monday, a son was arrested after he was found sitting the exams on behalf of his father who registered as a private candidate.

Busia Police Station officers guarding the English Paper 1 test at Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School arrested the suspect after they were informed by the Center Manager of impersonation.

“On receiving the report, the County Security team led by the DCC and SCPC rushed to the centre and found the suspect namely George Barasa Makokha,” reads the police report.

Barasa admitted to being sent by his father to sit for the exams on his behalf.

“…upon interrogation, he (Barasa) disclosed that he had been sent by a candidate of Index Number 35960101026 registered for Busia Sub County Private namely Josephat Basoga Makokha and who is the suspect’s father,” reads the police report.
