Waiguru arrest

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is in hot soup as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) concluded investigating her graft case, and is facing arrest.

In a statement, EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak Thursday, March 17, said that the commission had recommended Waiguru to be prosecuted over corruption.

This is in a case where Waiguru is accused of allegedly embezzling county funds totaling to Ksh58 million.

EACC forwarded Waiguru file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) headed by Noordin Haji for furhter action and possible arrest.

“We are done with investigations on the Kirinyaga Governor and recommended her to be charged. Her case started a long time ago and we all know that corruption takes time to be determined,” stated Mbarak.

The EACC CEO further dismissed claims that the EACC was targeting Waiguru over her political alignment, revealing that other civil servants were also on the commission’s radar.

“We forwarded the file of Lamu Governor, Fahim Yasin Twaha, for prosecution and now we have recommended Kirinyaga Governor to be charged. There are other governors we are investigating. We are also probing several chief county officers as well as heads of state corporations,” Twalib explained.

Waiguru was summoned by the EACC in September 2021 over the questionable allocation of the said funds to settle a pending bill approved by the County Assembly.

The governor explained that the pending bill accrued during the issuance of title deeds in South Ngariama.

“This pending bill was for issuance of title deeds in South Ngariama, and what they are alleging is that we shouldn’t have deliberated on this issue at the Cabinet,” Waiguru told the media.

She further claimed that her case was politically instigated owing to her defection from the ruling party Jubilee.

“Last time I said … ‘on BBI let me keep quiet a bit…’ immediately, EACC raided my office…  Recently I said am ‘… introspecting on the political way forward…’  and again, immediately I get EACC summons, complete with all the subtle threatening inflexibilities… and media alerts on an alleged payment of Ksh52 million,” Waiguru reiterated.
