Meet Danson ‘Kulmax’ Mungai; The Rapping Police Officer

Danson Kulmax Mungai is a police officer who have immersed himself in the rapping game, re-defining what police can do.

Danson Mungai Njuguna alias Kulmax, is a police constable based at Nassuit Police Station in Nakuru, and has taken music more than just entertainment, a calling.

Kulmax’s music journey began at Karega Secondary School, where he discovered his music talent, years before he joined the Kenya police service.

For Kulmax, this was just a hobby which later turned to a source of income following years of sharpening his music skill.

Despite composing a number of singles, which were never recorded at the time owing to financial constraints, Njuguna’s breakthrough came after he graduated from the National Police College in Embakasi and joined the NPS’ official band after being posted at Faza Island, Lamu County.

He would later serve in, Uasin Gishu, Moi’s Bridge, Baragoi, and Kabiyet Police Stations.

After receiving substantial support and encouragement from his comrades, the Urban Hip-Hop musician released his first single ‘Roho Juu’ which was followed by another hit in the form of ‘Tunang’aa’.

These songs got positive reception, paving way for Njuguna to release 10 additional songs. The rest is history as Njuguna is now a household name both locally and internationally.

Kulmax music star continues to shine as he has performed at a number of police forums including the ongoing Nakuru football tournament dubbed ‘Healing the Boot’ and at the NPS’ main campus where he took a standardization course.

Njuguna now has a video and movie production company, Max Shutters, in a bid to leverage music technology and provide aspiring police musicians with the most innovative products.

“His selfless initiative has immensely supported efforts in addressing work-related stress and mental health challenges among police officers which have consequently enhanced service delivery,” said NPS.

“I plan to expand my company with the intention of imparting my irrefutable natural talent to more upcoming and particularly the less privileged in the society. This will help those talented in music to realize their full potential,” Njuguna said on his part.   

Not one to forget his roots, Njuguna also gives back to the community. He offers financial support and mentorship programmes for the less fortunate in society.
