Residents who waved placards and twigs said they were not happy with the way ODM was handling its nominations exercise.

In a radio interview, ODM Chair John Mbadi intimated that Senator Ochillo Ayacko had been issued with a direct ticket to vie for Migori governor.

This was followed by a letter Friday April 15, that stated that only the positions of Women Representative, MCA and Suna West MP were going to have universal suffrage for nominations.

On Thursday, while responding to her party chair, Migori Governor aspirant Dr. Pamela Odhiambo urged her supporters to ignore Mbadi’s remarks.

Pamela said she was not aware of any position by the party where her rival Ayacko had been issued with the highly coveted nomination certificate.

But while demonstrating against the move by ODM, residents threatened to shift base and seek an alternative route if the region’s dorminant party did not heed to their calls for universal suffrage in all party positions.

“We want all aspirants from the position of MCA, Women Rep, all MPs, Senate and also Governor to meet at the ballot so that we can decide our leaders,” said Ochieng’ Kudho.

Another resident Mary Konyach said it was unfair for ODM top leadership to decide for them their leaders yet they were members and key stakeholders in the party.

“Sisi sote tunapenda Baba, na tunapenda Jakom. Tunaomba nomination kuanzia kiti cha MCA hadi ugavana,” said Konyach.

The demonstrators claimed that the ODM was discriminating against Women aspirants by blocking their bid to be elected by party members.

The demos came hours after elders from Uriri Constituency had expressed similar concerns against the party for issuing a direct ticket to current MP Mark Nyamita.

Nyamita was contesting the ticket with businessman Jared Kwaga.

Other MPs who will fly the party ticket come August following direct nomination are Nyatike MP Tom Odege, Paul Abuor (Rongo) John Walter (Awendo) and Junet Mohamed (Suna East).

Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama and his Kuria West counterpart Mathias Robi are members of the UDA party.
