Parliament approves Martha Koome nomination for CJ

Member of Parliament Wednesday May 19, approved the nomination of Martha Karambu Koome for the position of Chief Justice.

This is in bid to confirm her as Kenya’s 15th and first female Chief justice if formally appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Lady Justice Koome was vetted Thursday last week by the Kangema Member of Parliament Muturi Kigano led Justice and Legal Affairs committee, before her name was tabled for approval in the special sitting by the MP’s.

The Court of Appeal judge emerged the best among candidates who were interviewed by the Judicial Service Commission.

Koome had been shortlisted alongside Said Chitembwe, Prof Patricia Mbote, Justice Marete Njagi and Senior Counsel Philip Murgor.

Other candidates were Justice Nduma Nderi, Fred Ngatia, Justice William Ouko, Dr Wekesa Moni and Alice Yano.

The Chief Justice designate boasts of 33 years experience of legal practice including having served as a High Court judge as well.

Her name will now be forwarded to President Kenyatta for formal appointment and swearing-in.
