Former Sports CS Hassan Wario has been sentenced to serve six months in jail after he was found guilty of abuse of office and corruption in a case linked to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The CS was also given an option to pay a fine of Sh3.6m by anti-corruption court magistrate Elizabeth Juma.

On the other hand Stephen Soi, who was Team Kenya’s Head of Delegation in the 2016 Rio Olympics was sentenced to serve a 12-year jail term or pay a fine of Sh105m after being found guilty of graft

The former sports CS had been charged alongside National Olympic Committee Kenya official Soi, former Sports PS Richard Ekai, Haron Komen, former director of administration at the Ministry of Sports, Francis Kinyili and Patrick Kimathi Nkabu.

But Ekai, Komen, Kinyili and Nkabu were acquitted on grounds of insufficient evidence.

The court heard that Wario approved the inclusion of three other persons travel to Rio and subsequently paid them allowances with Magistrate Juma saying this amounted to abuse of office.
