The prime suspect in the murder of 5,000m record holder Agnes Tirop is behind bars.

DCI officers arrested Ibrahim Rotich in Changamwe, Mombasa while he tried to flee the country.

Rotich was in a relationship with Tirop. He is also believed to be behind the murder of the two-time World Athletics bronze medalist.

Tirop’s lifeless body was found lying on her bed Wednesday morning in Iten, with visible stab wounds on her abdomen.

Police then immediately named Rotich as the prime suspect in the death of the Olympian.

According to the DCI, Rotich earlier escaped their trap, ramming into a lorry at Athi River along Mombasa road.

But Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata said that Rotich was in custody at Changamwe police station.

Elungata said Rotich awaited transfer to Nairobi Friday, where he will be charged with murder.

Last month, Tirop broke the women-only 10km world record at an Adidas event in Germany, with a time of 30:01. This was 28 seconds faster than the previous record.

In her owner, Athletic Kenya cancelled the cross country events scheduled for the next two weeks.
