Senegal open historic 50K capacity Diamniadio Olympic stadium

Senegal has opened its biggest stadium, 50,000 capacity Diamniadio Olympic Stadium.

Also know as Abdoulaye Wade Stadium, the Diamniadio Olympic stadium’s inauguration ceremony was attended by African and European heads of state and global sporting dignitaries.

These include Presidents Macky Sall (Senegal), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Adama Barrow (Gambia) and Guinea-Bissau’s Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embalo.

Others present were Liberia’s President George Weah, Turkey’s Tayyip Erdogan and FIFA President Giovanni Infantino.

The Turkish-built stadium, constructed at a reported cost of $270 million, will host the Summer Youth Olympics in 2026, and was filled with fans waving Senegal’s green, yellow and red flag.

The ground, named after the country’s president from 2000 to 2012, is in Diamniadio, a city which is being built about 30 kilometres from the capital Dakar.

The stadium has installed goal line technology and Video Assistant Referee.

It will host Senegal and Egypt’s World Cup playoff game in March.
